Collection: Valerie Savchits
(b 1993, United Kingdom. Lives and works in Brighton)
Valerie Savchits' working-class upbringing in post-Soviet Latvia; informs her art. She witnessed a “country unwilling to embrace progress”; which she says “manifested her interest in the concept of ugliness and its position in art and culture”. Her work invites viewers to immerse themselves in a world where humanity has failed to fight its own apathy and indifference; a world where fiction becomes reality; and a cult of ignorance abounds. These images are accompanied by diary entries and excerpts from Russian literature. Savchits' practice engages a range of two-dimensional media as well as experimental sculptures made from various materials; including clay; raw minerals; wood and metal.
