Collection: Szymon Kula

(b 1994, France. Lives and works in Lyon)

Kula's practice centres on themes of nostalgia; craft revival; and speculative futures. His work usually corresponds to items of material culture (garments; elements of architecture; tools; etc.) examining the relationship between these modern materials and their historical equivalents. Kula wonders about the future of craft practices within the context of environmental breakdown; he looks at the potential utopias these objects can generate; as well as their role in aiding survival in our unknown future ecosystem. He says; “By displacing deep-past materialisms into a contemporary context; I re-explore their viabilities; potential adaptations; and community roles.”
