Collection: Olly Fathers

(b 1987, United Kingdom. Lives and works in London)

Olly Fathers' work explores the relationship between abstract shapes; forms and different materials. He takes great satisfaction in the making process; creating well-finished; often playful pieces that encourage closer inspection in order to come to grips with the method of construction; inlaying and overlaying. With a keen interest in woodwork; both as a skill and as a medium for art and design; Fathers finds inspiration from architecture; design and early computer technology and graphics. His pieces use intricately cut paper or wood veneers brought together using self-taught marquetry techniques. The beautifully finished pieces display contrasting natural and dyed coloured layers of paper or wood; which causes the shapes to appear raised out the surface; in a Tromp l'oeil affect.
