Serraf's work explores the surreal nature of navigating post-apartheid South Africa as a foreigner to construct meaning and discover belonging. The alien socio-political and physical landscapes of the country; reinforced by actions; reactions and interactions; continually conjure a sense of extreme displacement and a search for the familiar. “My work is informed by memories I have from when I was a child in Zimbabwe and my endeavour to understand the nostalgia I feel toward the unfamiliar;” she says. “In an attempt to figure out what I am and where I belong; I will continue to visualize my memories; thoughts and narratives.”
