Collection: Mia Chaplin
(b 1991, South Africa. Lives and works in Cape Town)
Working in oil on canvas and acrylic on paper; Chaplin's highly expressive paintings are characterised by their rich impasto surfaces and visible brushstrokes. Her most recent works use a muted colour palette of pink fleshy tones and golden highlights. Her loose; erratic style of painting is intuitive and heightens the emotionality of her pieces; they reflect a sense of detachment between the self and the external world. Chaplin's works sway between voyeurism and intimate interaction; while remaining consistently self-referential.
