Collection: Mark Beldan
(b 1976, United Kingdom. Lives and works in London)
Beldan's work abstracts and reconstitutes space into colour and pattern using memory and local history as a starting point. Earlier in his career he worked in oil on linen; only utilizing oil on paper in the planning stage of an artwork. Later; he developed his paper process as a complete practice in its own right. More recently; he has been working with gouache; inspired by its position outside of traditions of oil and watercolour painting. “Gouache is the material of illuminated manuscripts and Matisse's cutouts;” he explains; “but in the method of application it is also much like the poster paints I used as a child.”
