Collection: Maddie Yuille
(b 1988, United Kingdom. Lives and works in London)
Yuille's inanimate interiors offer a glimpse of life without a coherent narrative; exploring the boundaries between familiar and unknown spaces. Yuille bases her paintings on photographs she takes of her own surroundings; simplifying these references beyond the point of clear recognition. The resulting non-spaces are freed from a particular narrative; sometimes resembling hotels or motels rather than domestic or more intimate spaces. “The illusion of painting is played with;” she says; “a world beyond the curtain is suggested; and yet each visible brush stroke reminds the viewer of the insistent reality of paint sitting on the surface of the canvas.”
