Collection: Lorienne Lotz
(b 1954, South Africa. Lives and works in Cape Town)
Lorienne Lotz reflects on her upbringing in Rhodesia; now known as Zimbabwe; and its impact on her psyche and artwork; which often features motifs of oppression. Her painting process involves a balance of chance tactics; attention and deep contemplation to create an emerging entity that is linked to the content and process. Lotz also discusses her choice of medium in installation pieces; aiming to use jarring images to reveal the absurdity of the human condition with a playful edge. “The choice of medium with regards to my installation pieces is determined by the context of what the artwork I am currently working on needs to convey; in such a way as to embed the subject in the material.”
