Collection: Julie Umerle
(Born in United Kingdom. Lives and works in London)
Umerle is an abstract painter who works in series that are consistently open-ended. Within each group of paintings; she explores similarity; repetition and difference. She interrogates the materiality of paint and the processes that define painterly abstraction through colour; form; surface and space. Examining the balance and weight of colour and the relationships formed between figure and ground; the series of works acquired by Art Gazette show a geometric or biomorphic shape defined by positioning within the square of the canvas. These paintings are monochrome; minimalist and hard-edged.
