Collection: Julie-Ann Simpson

(b 1992, United Kingdom. Lives and works in Glasgow)

Using observations and memories as starting points; Simpson's practice attempts to make the intangible visible. She is interested in the ambiguity and disorientation that can result from everyday juxtapositions. The porous boundaries between interior and exterior spaces; man and nature; dreams and reality. She says; “In some ways; I employ a synesthetic approach; exploring the language of painting to describe a sensory experience.” Her latest body of work; developed from a recent two-month residency in Japan; considers our relationship with the natural world; whilst bringing together ideas around imagination; ritual; memory; pleasure and language. She uses this experience as a lens to better understand the folklore of her native islands; and to create a new personal mythology.
