Collection: Hannalie Taute

(b 1977, South Africa. Lives and works in Riversdal)

Taute's work is in a constant state of evolution. Her works depict moments in time; instances in which a non-traditional media undergo a process of change. Her primary medium is rubber; particularly repurposed rubber inner tubes; recently she has combined this material with embroidery. The resilient nature of the rubber is contrasted by the delicacy of the thread; a meeting that is subverted in her sensitive treatment of the rubber and rougher arrangements of the thread work. For Taute; these juxtapositions are a metaphor for the nature of identity; which can be made up of multiple; conflicting impulses and behaviours and is deeply rooted in personal relationships with the outside world.
