Collection: Eric Cruikshank

(b 1975, United Kingdom. Lives and works in Dundee)

Taking landscape as a starting point; Cruikshank's paintings seek to reflect the emotive qualities of place. He uses colour as a vehicle to reveal the picture plane's underlying point of reference; with a palette tied to the Scottish landscape. The surface of Cruikshank's work does not tend to immediately reveal its full range of hues and gradations. This encourages a concentrated engagement with the qualities of paint and painting itself. Through adding and removing layers of paint he manages to produce subtle shifts between glowing undertones and rich overtones.
