Alec Cumming's work unpacks his experiences of living and travelling abroad in places as wide-ranging as India; Sri Lanka and California. Using oil on canvas; Cumming's pan-global visual vocabulary creates a dialogue between West and East through abstracted; semi-recognisable places; forms and images featuring fabrics; snapshots of street views; tyres stacked on the road or a table laden with drinks and paraphernalia. Often his work suggests a narrative; but focuses expressly on the way light enhances the compositions he creates. This kind of abstraction allows me the pleasure of observing the world and translating it into a visual dialogue;” he says.
