Lakin Ogunbanwo

(b 1987Nigeria. Lives and works in Lagos)

Ogunbanwo uses fashion photography and classical portraiture to create enigmatic photographs with erotic and subversive undertones. His subjects are often masked by shadow, drapery, and foliage within the frame of the photograph. His use of vibrant flat colour and bold composition are a homage to African studio photography popular in the 1960s and 70s.

Central to Ogunbanwo’s artistic investigation is his desire to document Lagos. He records the complexity of its culture using staged portraiture techniques and fashion photography as his starting point.

“I’ve always tried to share a personal vision of my immediate surroundings…to portray beauty as I see it and provide the audience with a personal insight into life on this part of the continent.”
