Julie Umerle

(b United States. Lives and works in London)

Umerle is an abstract painter who works in series that are consistently open-ended. Within each group of paintings, she explores similarity, repetition and difference. She interrogates the materiality of paint and the processes that define painterly abstraction through colour, form, surface and space.

Examining the balance and weight of colour and the relationships formed between figure and ground, the series of works acquired by Art Gazette show a geometric or biomorphic shape defined by positioning within the square of the canvas. These paintings are monochrome, minimalist and hard-edged.
