Jenny Beard

(b 1994United Kingdom. Lives and works in Leeds)

Beard is a painter who uses digital tools to create and manipulate sketches. Through an automatic drawing process, she explores optical space, depth and flatness, taking abstract imagery as a base. Her work is open-ended and explorative as she plays with the paradox of appropriating abstract marks for abstract paintings. She is interested in the capacity for digital methods to open up new ways of seeing and layering paint.

Beard questions the point at which gestures and marks become signs. Where a sign is a directive, offering information, marks are ambiguous. Pushing paint between gesture and sign, she studies this transformation: What happens if a mark is isolated – if it is scaled up or repeated?
