Henry Woolway’s work juxtaposes torn and cut canvas with more structural elements in order to try and communicate his own conflicting desires to break from the norm on one hand and conform on the other. This duality forms the basis of his practice and is something that he consistently returns to.
In recent work his patient layering colour and texture and manipulating paint is intended to reflect the slower pace of life under lockdown and greater opportunity for calmer thought and moments of reflection.
