Working predominantly with installation, Andrews considers our interaction with spaces. In her practice, a consistent and overlapping visual language draws on the familiarity of domestic space and the material qualities of the ‘third space’ - a neutral space separate from the two predominant surroundings of home and work.
The term ‘third space’ is described by American sociologist Ray Oldenburg as a social space without the constraints of the home or work environment. The third space is crucial to our public life and interaction within communities. Andrews’ work looks to the shared aesthetics of these communal spaces to examine the behaviours and social interactions that they elicit.
She consequently employs processes of commercial textile production such as weaving and pleating, that hold connotations of functionality and domesticity and print based techniques that embrace multiple production and its relationship to contemporary culture.
