Eugenie Marais

(b 1973South Africa. Lives and works in Tshwane)

Marais consistently seeks out new techniques in her work using a range of media including drawing, printmaking, collage and oil painting. Often working in series or with repetition, she employs a muted colour palette to develop dream-like imagery, seeking to evoke feelings of nostalgia, loneliness and serenity.

Reflecting on Retrograde, a series of prints produced in collaboration with The Artists’ Press, Marais writes, "We often stare into the distance with thoughts and emotions about the past, present and future, and this is often accompanied by a meditative sense of deja vu and jamais vu."
