Erin Hughes

(b 1989United Kingdom. Lives and works in Mid-wales)

Erin Hughes creates hundreds of her own hand-marbled papers which she uses as her palette to construct collages that emulate the traditional craft of Pietre Dure. The source-image of her recent work is often selected from the first page of a Google image search result. Rendering these quickly sourced landscape images with a slow, hand-made process gives a curious redemptive quality. Following her interest in craft within a contemporary art context, Erin sees making processes as a combative approach, a way of having a direct relationship to the world around us.
