Artist's statement

(b 1987GB. Lives and works in Brighton)

Brookes makes paintings in response to her relationships, memories and observations. She layers and fuses these sources in a collage-like process toward forming intuitively worked paintings as her primary medium. Through painting, she says she develops a heightened awareness of her body, actions and thoughts, which can sometimes translate into what she terms ‘unsettling’ elements in her work.
