Artist's statement

(b 1977GB. Lives and works in LONDON)

Each of Lewis' paintings emerges from an encounter. Thematically, she is interested in moments of transition, where change or transformation manifest physically or emotionally through behaviour and body language. This is also closely linked to her preoccupation with female sexuality, and her attempt to challenge the image of women as it has been constructed historically by men. “The paintings shift between what is seen and what is felt,” says Lewis, “They morph between the act of looking and the manifestation of a sensation – be that flirtatious glances, desire or defiance.”
