Artist's statement
(b 1989ZA. Lives and works in Johannesburg)
Gates is interested in everyday systems of meaning and the technologies they produce. He creates objects with the intention of reflecting his internal processing, the results often jarring with the surface appearances of his everyday life. As such, his practice reconciles intuition and lived experience with social and physical structures. “I explore the role technology and material objects play in organizing my experiences,” he says. “Using these devices as raw materials, I create new technologies that I can share with others.”Solo exhibitions
