Artist's statement

(b 1991GB. Lives and works in Brighton)

Ashley Sheekey's work is largely inspired by urban landscape, and the public and private spaces we occupy within it. Her work seeks to show “the strangeness of the built environment,” particularly when something seems out of place or surprising. Sheekey says it is that strangeness that she considers worth documenting. “I'm particularly interested in the presence of rules and disruptive visual instructions; unending development that alters formerly familiar surroundings; the blurred, delicate boundaries between public and private space; desire for ownership or control, and anonymous territorial acts,” says Sheekey. She presents these ideas through drawing, writing, and digital collage, working mainly from memory. The results present a close look at the elements that inform and influence human behavior in urban environments.
