Alec Cumming's work unpacks his experiences of living and travelling abroad in places as wide-ranging as India, Sri Lanka and California. Using oil on canvas, Cumming's pan-global visual vocabulary creates a dialogue between West and East through abstracted, semi-recognisable places, forms and images featuring fabrics, snapshots of street views, tyres stacked on the road or a table laden with drinks and paraphernalia.
Often his work suggests a narrative, but focuses expressly on the way light enhances the compositions he creates. "This kind of abstraction allows me the pleasure of observing the world and translating it into a visual dialogue,” he says.
